F&P level N。 Would have been fine if not for the page that talks about how moths are hundreds of millions of years older than butterflies。

We received this book a couple of days ago (having ordered it online) and my nearly 4yo and even my nearly 2yo have already requested we read it several times。 I am absolutely thrilled with this purchase, and clearly my boys give it their stamp of approval, too。 Admittedly, my boys have always taken a keen interest in insects and that must play a role in their interest here, but the book itself brings the topic to life: the lifelike drawings that adorn every page are exquisite and a great source We received this book a couple of days ago (having ordered it online) and my nearly 4yo and even my nearly 2yo have already requested we read it several times。 I am absolutely thrilled with this purchase, and clearly my boys give it their stamp of approval, too。 Admittedly, my boys have always taken a keen interest in insects and that must play a role in their interest here, but the book itself brings the topic to life: the lifelike drawings that adorn every page are exquisite and a great source of joy to both children, being perhaps the main appeal to my 1yo (who mastered the word 'spikey' over describing some of the more spectacular caterpillars)。 The book gives fascinating facts (did you know there is a butterfly that rubs its wings together to make a hissing sound to deter predators?!) but in a poetic, light way, always accompanied by vivid pictures。 I will be buying the others in this series。 。。。more

This book is kind of like a categorical text structure where each page is a new category about the trait of a butterfly and the paragraphs on that page are details about why the "a butterfly is。。。" statement is true。 Not super long and not super engaging, but would be a great mentor text to show how you can structure your expository text This book is kind of like a categorical text structure where each page is a new category about the trait of a butterfly and the paragraphs on that page are details about why the "a butterfly is。。。" statement is true。 Not super long and not super engaging, but would be a great mentor text to show how you can structure your expository text 。。。more

Just beautiful! I could never say enough about the books that Dianna Hutts Aston creates - absolutely stunning illustrations that are always accompanied by whimsical descriptions and facts。

Sweet scientific book for children! Love the addition of charts。 Great way to teach the littles。

I absolutely loved it! Alex seems interested in butterflies but it had too much text for him。 Wait a couple years and he’ll be ready。 But I personally learned a bunch! And illustrations were fantastic!

Beautiful illustrations with so much to see and find on each page。 Info/fact driven, so the kids don't always sit to listen, but they love to look。 Beautiful illustrations with so much to see and find on each page。 Info/fact driven, so the kids don't always sit to listen, but they love to look。 。。。more

1。 N/A2。 Kindergarten - 3rd Grade。 3。 A book about butterflies and caterpillars。 It is about their lifecycle and how long it takes to go from a caterpillar to a butterfly。 4。 This book is very detailed and the images of caterpillars and butterflies are very appealing to the eye。 5。 This book could be used during a science lesson on the process of a caterpillar turning into a butterfly。

A Butterfly is Patient is an absolutely gorgeous informational book。 It is appropriate for any elementary school age child if read by an adult。 An upper elementary student could read it on their own to discover facts about the wonderful world of butterflies。 I thoroughly enjoyed the beautiful and colorful illustrations and welcoming text。 We learn about butterflies from the time they are eggs beneath a leaf to when they soar to distant lands。 It is an engaging book that teaches many interesting A Butterfly is Patient is an absolutely gorgeous informational book。 It is appropriate for any elementary school age child if read by an adult。 An upper elementary student could read it on their own to discover facts about the wonderful world of butterflies。 I thoroughly enjoyed the beautiful and colorful illustrations and welcoming text。 We learn about butterflies from the time they are eggs beneath a leaf to when they soar to distant lands。 It is an engaging book that teaches many interesting facts about several different types of butterflies。 The book is intriguing and although it provides a great deal of information, it also invites you to learn more, especially about the specific species of butterflies mentioned。 I have always loved butterflies because of their captivating beauty and their miraculous transformation。 It's difficult to believe that a caterpillar can become such an amazing creature, but we are able to see this along with other fascinating insights such as how butterflies protect themselves and how they get their nourishment。 Although factual, the book does not lessen the awe and wonder of these unique beings。Through this text, we go on a spectacular journey from egg to butterfly while learning new terms。 In a classroom, I would use this book as a mentor text for incorporating important details or to discuss print presentation。 It can also be used to introduce butterflies for a science lesson on nature and the variety of creatures。 In class, you could even observe a caterpillar building a cocoon and then becoming a butterfly for the students to watch after reading this book。 A good friend of mine did this with her daughters each year with monarch butterflies and watching the whole process was amazing for us all。 I would also tie this to an art lesson on symmetry。 The students could have this book read to them and then they could research a specific species for both an art and writing project。 One other idea would be to have students practice summarizing with this book。 The teacher could read the details on a page and then have the students guess the summary statement at the top or come up with their own。 Each page has an overarching sentence on it such as "A butterfly is creative" or "A butterfly is a traveller。" 。。。more

This series is just amazing。 I can’t recommend these books highly enough, this author and illustrator are so perfectly paired。 I rarely buy books as I work in a library, but I bought three of these to give as gifts to children (and adults) in my life。 The colors, whimsical but accurate illustrations, fanciful fonts working with the art and meandering around the page, and so many carefully chosen facts to share。 I’ll say it again, I LOVE these books。

i am todays years old when i find out (some) butterflies are poisonous。

A butterfly is Patient by Dianna Hutts Aston is an informative story about how butterflies come to be and the different kinds that there are。 The book has very detailed illustrations of the butterflies that would read the reader intrigued。 The text is perfect for younger readers as it rhymes at times and describes each butterfly and their aspects。 It also informs the reader where they can be found, their uniqueness, and the common things they have with moths, where they travel, and how fast they A butterfly is Patient by Dianna Hutts Aston is an informative story about how butterflies come to be and the different kinds that there are。 The book has very detailed illustrations of the butterflies that would read the reader intrigued。 The text is perfect for younger readers as it rhymes at times and describes each butterfly and their aspects。 It also informs the reader where they can be found, their uniqueness, and the common things they have with moths, where they travel, and how fast they go。 It is a very informative book for children to read。 。。。more

Great pictures and very informative。

Short and colorfully done is this picture book。 Being outside of the age range for this book, I gotta say this book is well-written in butterfly facts and the details on the hand illustrations is spectacular。 More so when there is over a dozen different butterflies drawn on here! Surely young readers will be informed on these winged-insects and develop further interest on this introductory to butterflies。

Katy Jo Turner

Shares some fun facts that I, as an adult, find really interesting。

Shari

Beautifully detailed book on butterflies。 Only drawback was its evolutionary approach stating moths appeared 190 million years ago and butterflies evolved 150 million years later。。。 If not for that, this would have been a home library purchase and not just a library loan。

Beautiful illustrations and great information, but a little long for my preschoolers。 I think I enjoyed the book more than they did, which is surprising because they usually like nonfiction about animals/insects quite a bit。 We did read this as a book walk at the local library, so they may have been more attentive if we were reading the book at home。

As with the rest of the books we've read in this series, this book imparts plenty of relevant information but in poetic, bite-sized pieces。 The illustrations are beautiful and you can spend more time on those than on the text。 It was fun to compare the different kinds of caterpillars in the beginning with their butterfly counterparts at the end。 Such diversity and beauty。 This was a great choice to accompany our caterpillar raising for homeschool science。 As with the rest of the books we've read in this series, this book imparts plenty of relevant information but in poetic, bite-sized pieces。 The illustrations are beautiful and you can spend more time on those than on the text。 It was fun to compare the different kinds of caterpillars in the beginning with their butterfly counterparts at the end。 Such diversity and beauty。 This was a great choice to accompany our caterpillar raising for homeschool science。 。。。more

This is a beautiful book! Preparing to teach a butterfly unit and will definitely use this book。 Information is easy for young ones to understand and pictures are outstanding。 Can’t wait to use this book。

Such a lovely book with beautiful illustrations!

Beautifully illustrated and very interestingMy kids and I study butterflies every spring。 Over the years we have accumulated several books about butterflies, but this is the best。 The illustrations are lovely and we learned a lot about butterflies that other kids books don’t cover。 It is written in cursive, so kids that don’t read cursive would have a hard time reading this independently, but I believe the script lends to the beauty of the book。

Absolutely gorgeous pictures。 For a picture book, it is packed with information。 At first I thought it was written at too high a level (AR 5th grade level) to read to 1st graders, but they understood everything fine and actually knew most of the words, like chrysalis and metamorphosis。 I don't know that they could have read it themselves (I doubt it), but having it read to them was no problem。 I would suggest getting all of Dianna Hutts Aston's books for their beauty and information。 Absolutely gorgeous pictures。 For a picture book, it is packed with information。 At first I thought it was written at too high a level (AR 5th grade level) to read to 1st graders, but they understood everything fine and actually knew most of the words, like chrysalis and metamorphosis。 I don't know that they could have read it themselves (I doubt it), but having it read to them was no problem。 I would suggest getting all of Dianna Hutts Aston's books for their beauty and information。 。。。more
